How to: Extract Your Own DNA

Nope, it’s not a joke, or a gross reference. Using common household ingredients, you can extract your DNA from your cells, and see the genetic material that make you…you. No fancy or expensive labratory equipment necessary.

To promote their upcoming episode Cracking Your Genetic Code, PBS’s NOVA demonstrates how you can spit in a cup, then isolate your DNA with table salt, dish soap, water, food coloring, and isopropal (rubbing) alcohol. Eventually, it’ll form in the solution as strands and clumps. 

Just make sure your archnemesis doesn’t get ahold of it and start spreading it around crime scenes. [via Make]
