Are There Any Great Non-Cheesy Love Songs Out There?

created at: 01/31/2012

I'm not opposed to the idea of Valentine's Day. I actually quite like it. I mean, I understand and sympathize with the argument that you shouldn't need a greeting card-sponsored single day of the year to tell someone you love them. Sure. Yeah, duh. Nobody actually only does that on Valentine's Day. And if you do, you're a butthole, and Valentine's Day isn't really for you, is it?

But there is an appeal of having a day of the year dedicated to reflecting on where your love life might be. If you're in a long-term relationship, having a marker to see how it might have grown and changed over the years is at least interesting, if not helpful, if you're open to it. If you've spent the last few V-Days with different folks, or with no one in particular, it might be somewhat painful, but could also serve as a way to reflect on the role of all relationships in becoming who you are, and what you actually really want from them.

The problem, of course, is in the execution of Valentine's Day. I'm not much for red roses and babies breath, but that's only an aesthetic problem, cause I think flowers are generally kinda cool. I can go without stuffed animals and factory candies, but am always a fan of sharing thoughtful cards and handwritten messages, and being intentional about all sorts of intimacy. (You know what I'm getting at.)

But the one place where I think we really need to rethink Valentine's Day? The love song. And that's where I need your help.   If you do a Google image search for "Love Song" you get, among others, stuff like this:

Now, of course I recognize that a Google image search is a terrible way to discuss trends in music choices, but you get the point. For whatever reason, there is a dominate understanding of what a love song should be...which is, namely, cheesy. Straight catharsis, appealing to established performance trends instead of actual sentiment, often emotionally manipulative, and breathy piano required.

And yet, we all know amazing songs about love. Heck, more than 75% of songs ever written are about love. It's an incredible thing worth trying to capture.

So, I'm asking this: tell me your favorite love songs. Like, in the traditional sense - actual songs about why relationships can be awesome, and true intimacy makes you wanna sing kind of stuff. No breakup songs, no I'm-looking-in-the-rear-view-mirror talk, but generally optimistic ones, while still being honest. New stuff, standards, indie rock, hip-hop, crooners...whatever you got. If you've got a soul, music touches it sometimes. Tell me when that happens, and post it in the comments below.

Next week, in plenty of time for Valentine's Day, I'll round some of them up, and we'll talk about it more.

To say thanks, I'll be randomly selecting ten commenters, and I'll givet them a full set (downloadable eBooks) of the Make It! how-to books that I co-authored and edited: Make It! Mid-Century Modern, Make It! Secondhand Chic, and Make It! Hardware Store Decor. That's thirty-six original how-to projects (or something like that), a $30 value.

So, let's have it, ManMade readers. What's a love song that you actually love?

I like 'whatta man' by Salt-n-Pepa, 'cos it's an upbeat song and it makes him smile ;-)

The All Time Top Ten Podcast did a show about this. Check it out here:

http://www.radio4all.net/index.php/program/58731

Boats and Birds by Gregory and the Hawk is one of my absolute favorites.

Other good ones are as follows:

Cigarettes and Coffee by Otis Redding

At Last by Etta James

Nobody's Gonna Love You by Band of Horses

these are just four of my absolute favorites ^-^

red sweater or martian girl by the aquabats :3 I loooove the aquabats X3

back that ass up- Juvenile

The best love song is "First Day of My life" by Bright Eyes.  Event the video rocks: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o5rhhQbyYV0

Mmm, mmm -- "Crazy Love" by Van Morrison. My favorite!

A Song For You. Leon Russell

My Morning Jacket - Librarian (helps if she's a librarian though)

My Morning Jacket - Hopefully

Al Green - Let's Stay Together (as Obama recently reminded us)

Love the new Sleeper Agent song Love Blood + as always, BIll Wither's Ain't No Sunshine and Just The Two of Us.

If This World Were Mine by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell. End of conversation.

Spotify: Marvin Gaye – If This World Were Mine

Night and Day- The version by Sondre Lerche

'Let's Give 'em Something To Talk About' - Bonnie Raitt - love that song and it reminds me of when my husband and I were seeing each other but nobody else knew it! So romantic!

@katie - great pick. Love that song.

I'll add "Two of Us" by the Beatles

Stickshifts and Safetybelts by Cake.  Super simple and fun.

Ingrid Michaelson - "The Way I Am"

Little Big Town - "Bring It On Home"

Lifehouse - "Everything"

Adele - "Lovesong"

Michael Cera & Ellen Page - "Anyone Else But You"

My Funny Valentine- Chet Baker

66 - Afghan Whigs

Sultry and smoky, like Whigs frontman Greg Dulli. "Tell me, baby, can you shake it / if I can move it with you, will you let me take it / I'll be down on my knees screaming / take me, take me, take me, I'm yours"

Only - Ass Ponys

A cute backwoods-sounding romp with lyrics like "I can be your supersize / you could be my only / onion rings or curly fries / quarter pounder, skip the salad bar"

Parentheses - The Blow

As an anxiety-sufferer, I might be biased, because there's a verse in this about being there for your other when they have a panic attack in the produce aisle of the grocery store. But cute and nerdy. "When you're holding me / we make a pair of parentheses"

Home - Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros

Like the Ingrid Michaelson song, this one is hard to avoid if you go looking for off-the-beaten-path love songs. But it's still really good.

The Idea Of Growing Old - The Features

Pretty much what you'd expect, but very cute and sweet.

You & I - Ingrid Michaelson

She has plenty of love songs, but this might be my favorite. The idea of, "I love you, so let's get rich and shower our friends and family with gifts." So whimsical and daydreamy.

In Spite Of Ourselves - John Prine

I forget who he duets on this with... but so adorable. It's an expression of a dirty, dusty, crass affection. An ode to undie-sniffing and booze-hounding and each other's quirky habits.

Who'd Have Known - Lilly Allen

A lovely song on the first buds of a new relationship. "Even though it's moving forward / it's just the right amount of awkward / and today you accidentally called me baby"

Sorry sorry sorry!!! The curse of enthusiasm! :x

This is going to take a few comments, it seems. Damn 2000 character limit! Forgive me!!

5 Years Time - Noah & The Whale

A daydream about being 5 years into a relationship with someone you just met--complete with a digression of "Hey, you might not talk to me next week, but this stuff is nice to think about, right?"

I Hate Seagulls - Kate Nash

Kate Nash has a dagger for a tongue, but this is so sweet. A list of little things to be hated, followed by a run-down of what she loves about you. "I love sleeping in your bed / I like knowing what is going on inside your head / I like taking time, I like your mind / And I like when your hand is in mine."

The Way I Am - Ingrid Michaelson

It's hard to assume anyone who's sought love songs hasn't heard it, but it's thorougly sweet and adoring.

All The Right Reasons - Jayhawks

Jayhawks are just fantastic. The end.

Picture In A Frame - Tom Waits

A lot of times, Tom Waits' strangeness and growly tendencies tend to not entice me too much, although I don't dislike him. But this song makes me tear up. "I'm gonna love you / 'til the wheels fall off" gets me every time...

Do You Realize?? - Flaming Lips

A beautiful reflection on love and life, and making the ackowledgement of death a positive, from "you're going to lose the ones you love" to "you've only got so much time, so cherish it."

My Freeze Ray - Neil Patrick Harris (From Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog)

I'm not one for musicals, but this movie and song are wonderful. "With my freeze ray I will find the time to find the words to / tell you how you make me feel, what's the phrase / like a fool / kinda sick / special needs / anyways..."

As a Libra and a hopeless romantic, I love love songs. As a haver of good taste (*buffs fingernails on shirt*), I love GOOD songs. So I collect good, fresh, non-crappy love songs. Things that express adoration and affection without the usual tired cliches, in an honest, sincere, and sometimes odd or ugly way.

Some of my favorites! (BTW, for the entertainment your blog has provided me, I would be more and happy to send a zip file of mp3s.)

Beginner's Luck - Eels

Just beautiful, my favorite "hey you, marry me?" type song.

Other great Eels selections: Sweet Lil' Thing, Losing Streak, Fresh Feeling, Ugly Love, I Like The Way This Is Going, P.S. You Rock My World--Eels write a mean love song, pure and simple and honest and raw and sweet all at once. Seriously, "I was at a funeral the day I realized / I wanted to spend my life with you"???

Sunlight In A Jar - The Lucksmiths

This song has my favorite lyric from a love song of all time: "Complex, completely credible love / the kind that is made, not handed to you from above / it's difficult to talk about and harder to write / like the rhythm of a pulse or the contours of firelight / overbown libretto and a sumptuous score / could never contain the contradictions I adore / That we can just be chaos and then something aligns / it's hard to attain, maintain it or define it."

Other great Lucksmiths love songs: Honey Honey Honey (about sitting on the couch watching TV & going to bed early, LOVE IT), Under The Rotunda, Guess How Much I Love You, plenty more I'm sure.

Folding Chair - Regina Spektor

Just fun and bouncy.

When U Love Somebody - Fruit Bats

Just sweet and simple, but fresh. "When you love somebody / it's hard to think about anything but to breathe"
