Can you guess from what basic everyday material he made it?  

That's right! Colored pencils. The project, "Consists of 500 vertically aligned pencils in two rows connected by plastic tubes, suspended between ceiling and floor by two nylon threads."

I thought: toothpicks.  Hey, you could do that with painted toothpicks, though you may want to sandpaper the exposed points.
