How To: Make Bacon Popcorn

created at: 08/29/2011

I love bacon. No surprises there. It’s amazing and it goes with everything—eggs, brussel sprouts, waffles, relish; the list goes on and on...

The truth is: everyone loves bacon. And with good reason. It's salty, smoky, fatty, crispy...and straight delicious So, why not merge it with something equally awesome, like popcorn? That’s right. It's happening, and it's really effing awesome. So, loosen your belt a few notches and get ready to dig in.

The concept is simple. When making popcorn the old fashioned way (you know, before we had microwaves) we used to cook it on the stove in a pot. Imagine that... And it consisted of just two simple ingredients: oil and popcorn kernels. So I figured why not switch out the corn oil for some flavorful bacon drippings?

The results are fabulous. A bowl of fluffy, crunchy white clouds with a hit of salty, smoky goodness. Sure to impress your friends and your taste buds.

Bacon Fat Popcorn

What You'll Need:
  • Rendered fat from 6 pieces of cooked thick-cut bacon
  • Popcorn kernels
  • Kosher salt, to taste
created at: 08/29/2011In a heavy bottom, high sided pot with a tight fitting lid, over medium-high heat, add enough rendered bacon fat to cover the base of the pan.

Place 3 popcorn kernels into the pan and put the lid on. When you hear the kernels pop, you know the pan is hot enough and ready for the rest. Pour in enough kernels to cover the bottom of your pan in one even layer.created at: 08/29/2011

Place the lid on and wiggle your pot back and forth over the burner to make sure no kernels get burnt. You will begin to hear popping, and smell the lovely aroma of bacon. Keep shaking, and remember it's worth it.

When the popping subsides, remove the pan from the stove and pour your bacon fat popcorn in a large bowl.

Season with plenty of kosher salt, get snuggly on the couch with someone cute, and munch to your heart’s content.

I think I love you. Bacon makes everything better so I don't know why I've never thought to do this before! This will be perfect for our snowy weekend at home!

I miss American Bacon soooo much.  When I get home, I eat pounds of the stuff.  The bacon we have here is unimaginably bad!  It's like flavorless Canadian Bacon (if you consider Canadian Bacon to have flavor!)  It doesn't crisp, it has no scrumptious fat, and to offend even further, you have to manually cut off the rind - yuck.  And no meat importation allowed.  Anyway, that's enough bellyaching...just stumbled onto your site.  It's wonderful!  Thanks for all the guidance and advice and lovely crafts (or should I say projects!).

That is actually amazing! I think I will have to try that. And I thought chocolate popcorn was as good as popcorn could get!

We make this fairly often. It's even better if you sprinkle some brown sugar on it afterwards! It really brings out the bacon flavor.

Bacon flavored popcorn... Making me wish I'd saved my bacon fat from making the bacon explosion yesterday. Yummmmmm.... there will be a next time and new chance! LOL
