Protect These Outdoor Items Before Winter Does Damage
Winter’s harsh conditions can wreak havoc on many outdoor items if left exposed to the elements. Snow, ice, and freezing temperatures can cause irreversible damage, leading to costly repairs or replacements. By taking the time to identify which items need extra care, you can ensure their longevity and save yourself from unnecessary headaches.
1. Garden Furniture
Leaving garden furniture outside during winter can lead to significant wear and tear. Wooden furniture, for instance, may crack or warp due to moisture absorption and freezing temperatures. Metal furniture isn’t immune either; prolonged exposure to snow and ice can result in rust and corrosion, compromising its structural integrity.
To protect your furniture, store it in a shed or garage or cover it with waterproof, heavy-duty tarps. Even if the materials claim to be weatherproof, extended exposure to harsh winter conditions can shorten their lifespan.
2. Grills and Barbecues
Grills and barbecues are not designed to withstand prolonged exposure to snow and freezing conditions. Moisture can cause rust to form on the metal components, while the cold can damage sensitive parts like burners and igniters.
It’s best to clean your grill thoroughly before storing it indoors or under a weather-resistant cover. Disconnect propane tanks and store them separately in a safe, ventilated area to reduce the risk of accidents.
3. Lawn Tools and Equipment
Lawn tools and equipment, such as shovels, rakes, and lawnmowers, can suffer from winter neglect. Moisture can cause wooden handles to rot and metal components to rust, reducing their functionality.
To avoid damage, clean and dry your tools before storing them in a dry, enclosed space like a garage or basement. For motorized equipment, consider adding fuel stabilizer to prevent engine issues when you’re ready to use them again.
4. Outdoor Decorations
Decorative items like garden statues, planters, and holiday lights can be surprisingly vulnerable to winter weather. Materials like ceramic and clay can crack when exposed to freezing temperatures, while water can infiltrate and ruin electrical components in light fixtures.
Bring these items indoors or store them in a sheltered area. If you can’t move certain decorations, wrap them securely with waterproof coverings to shield them from ice and snow.
5. Outdoor Cushions and Fabrics
Outdoor cushions, rugs, and fabrics may be designed for outdoor use, but they are not invincible against winter’s challenges. Moisture can lead to mold, mildew, and unpleasant odors, while repeated freezing and thawing cycles can weaken the materials.
Store these items in a dry, ventilated space like a storage bin or inside your home. If they must remain outside, invest in durable, weatherproof covers to reduce exposure to the elements.
6. Bicycles and Sports Equipment
Bicycles and other sports equipment are especially prone to winter damage. Rust can form on metal parts, tires can crack or deflate, and freezing temperatures can weaken plastic components.
Store bikes and gear indoors or in a well-protected shed. If indoor storage isn’t an option, use heavy-duty covers designed for winter weather to provide as much protection as possible.
